What is Openfit?

The Openfit fitness streaming app is a digital, subscription-based workout and nutrition platform. They offer over 160 workouts that can be streamed online via their website or their app.

At least, that’s the short answer. If you’re looking for a thorough Openfit review, we've got that covered too. Here's everything you need to know about the latest in home-based app and streaming workouts.

Openfit currently features six curated fitness programs:

  • Xtend Barre: a "mix of cardio, Pilates, and ballet fundamentals" led by trainer Andrea Rogers

  • XB Pilates™: a fun modern twist on Pilates with cardio and total-body sculpting by Andrea Rogers

  • Rough Around The Edges™: workouts lead by Hollywood stunt women and martial artists

  • Tough MudderT-Minus 30™: led by 4-time Tough Mudder winner Hunter McIntyre, this program features workouts that improve general fitness but can also help you prepare for events like an obstacle course race or a 5k

  • Yoga52™: this program offers weekly yoga routines led by certified yoga instructors Odette Hughes, Brent Laffoon, Micki Duran, David Regelin, and Marie Grujicic

  • 600 Secs™: 10-minute high intensity (HIIT) workouts led by certified personal trainer and functional movement specialist Devin Wiggins

In addition to their workout programs, Openfit also offers personalized nutrition programs and meal plans as well as fitness gear and supplements.

How Can Openfit Help You?

Openfit is designed for a broad audience. But the platform features customizable options if you want specific programs and workouts to suit your personality, preferences, and goals. Most workouts can be done in less than 30 minutes and include routines that target strength-training, fat loss, aerobic endurance, power, stamina, and mobility.

Openfit may be especially helpful if going to the gym isn’t your thing. All of the workouts can be done in your own home with little to no equipment. The convenience and flexibility of Openfit makes it ideal for anyone who has a busy schedule, lives far away from a gym, can't afford a gym membership, has young children, doesn't feel comfortable in a gym environment, travels a lot, or simply prefers to workout at home.

Does Openfit Include Nutrition?

Yes! We know from the research that healthier nutrition combined with physical activity is more effective for weight loss than either diet and exercise alone. That’s why Openfit subscriptions also include customized nutrition plans to help compliment your workout schedule. The fact that the Openfit platform covers both fitness and nutrition at an affordable price makes it extremely useful. It takes a lot of the guesswork out of fitness for you so all you have to do is commit to the program.

Openfit also offers community support through their social media platforms including Facebook and Instagram. The fact that Openfit members have a space to communicate and support each other is a huge plus, since research shows connections via online weight loss communities can help people lose more weight.

Does Openfit Really Work?

On their website, the Openfit team says you can lose "up to 15 pounds in just 30 days" using their program, although they do include a reasonable disclaimer: "Results vary depending on starting point and effort."

People regularly comment that Openfit workouts are challenging, tough, and versatile enough to keep them interested and motivated. Reviewers comment about feeling sore (in a good way) and being surprised about how strenuous some of the programs are, especially Xtend Barre.

It's not clear based on the feedback how many long-term customers they have, most reviewers seem to comment after less than a week after signing up. So, it's not clear how sustainable the program really is. That said, at least a few people say they've achieved double-digit weight loss and have participated in multiple 30-day Openfit challenges, which shows the program does work—at least for some users.

Openfit Foods & Recipes: What Type of Recipes and Food Can You Expect From Openfit?

According to their website, Openfit will give you customized meal plans and nutrition tips based on your specific goals at sign up. You can't access any of their meal plans until you subscribe to a membership plan, but Openfit does share a lot of nutritional information on their blog and social media accounts. This includes topics such as:

  • Meal planning and meal prep tips

  • Nutritional benefits of specific foods

  • Healthy recipes—including gluten-free, keto, and vegan

  • Pros and cons of different diets

  • Nutritional considerations for special populations, including children

Many of these articles are written by people with relevant credentials, including registered dietitians and certified strength and conditioning specialists. Their blog also features an article called "How to Get Started With the Openfit Nutrition Plan" where they give a little more info about their featured programs.

  • Openfit doesn't have a contact phone number, so to get in touch with customer service you have to send them an email via their Contact Us Most reviewers seem satisfied with their customer service, but others have had issues with canceling memberships and getting in touch with someone who can help in a timely way.

  • Some reviewers, especially people with prior fitness experience, express concerns about the technique and form used in some of the instructional workout videos. These workouts also aren't designed for pregnant and nursing women, so these women should consult with their doctors before signing up for a subscription.

Based on the results of your questionnaire, Openfit will send you a Results Plan, complete with workouts and meal plans tailored to your specific goal.

Subscribing to Openfit directly through their website seems like the easiest route to take. But you can also find Openfit programs through iTunes or the Roku® channel store.

So, Is Openfit Worth It?

This program offers a wide library of workouts geared toward specific goals as well as nutrition plans that can help you amplify your results. It's also a lot more affordable than many other online subscription fitness and nutrition programs. You can cancel anytime and test it out with a free trial, so your risk is relatively low when you sign up. If convenience, price, and variability in your workouts are important to you, Openfit may be a good choice.

Openfit Program Spotlight - The Xtend Barre Ballet Workout Review

The fundamentals of dance can help you build a lean, strong, powerful physique with long lines and graceful movements. That’s probably one of the reasons Xtend Barre has become one of the most popular programs offered on Openfit.

The other reasons are likely due to the broad appeal of the Xtend Barre workout which combines elements of dance and Pilates. This combo results in a low-impact workout that infuses barre-based ballet basics with cardio to help build strength, flexibility, and endurance for people of all genders and fitness levels who want to get fit or lose weight.

What is the Xtend Barre Workout Like?

Andrea-rogers-xtendbarre-openfit

Xtend was founded by Andrea Rogers a dancer, choreographer, and teacher. In addition to Xtend Barre she has also created XB Pilates (also available Openfit). Her signature high-energy approach keeps the workout upbeat throughout to help increase your heart rate and burn calories.

Most Xtend Barre workouts take 30 mins and, through Openfit, also include real-time advice and form feedback from personal trainers. While there are elements of barre that will work your arms and shoulders (and you can choose those options when creating your schedule), like most barre classes, the primary focus is on your core and lower body. Stretching is also a key component of each workout as you’ll stretch each set of muscles after you work them. Even with the stretching exercises woven throughout, the routines can be surprisingly aerobic, especially for beginners, and it may take a little time to get a handle on form and transitions, but as you get used to these elements it becomes more fun.

The level of cardio doesn’t quite replicate a run or a stint on the elliptical, but it will elevate your heart-rate and make you sweat. The intensity is high enough to make it an effective and time-saving way to tackle strength training and cardio simultaneously. Another potential bonus of Xtend Barre is that the program doesn’t require  a lot of room, so if you have limited space and time, Xtend Barre scores on both fronts.

In order to follow the routines, all you’ll need is a sturdy household chair, the back of a sofa, or a counter. You can also add one, two or three-pound weights, resistance bands, and an exercise ball. But all of the exercises are demonstrated with and without equipment. If you’re just starting out, you can probably begin without the additional props, because you will begin to “feel the burn” through multiple sets and repetitions even without equipment. As you get stronger, adding weights and other tools will help increase the effect of the workouts.

Benefits of Xtend Barre

The fitness world has seen an influx in ballet-inspired workout programs, in the US alone, participants in barre workouts have reached 3.9 million, which is a 26% increase over the last six years Barre is increasingly popular because it’s an effective way to get results while also building other skills like flexibility and coordination and improving posture and confidence. However, one of the criticisms of some barre classes is that basic ballet movements often focus too heavily on small movements, Xtend Barre overcomes that limitation with diverse programs that focus on moving the whole body.

The Xtend Barre classes are built to increase muscle strength while lengthening and toning your body. With categories that include Signature (total-body), Cardio, Legs, Booty, Core, Sculpt & Define, and Flexibility & Balance. Your daily workout calendar is customizable to help you work on your specific goals and trouble spots. So, you can choose segments that work your upper-body for arms and back, your core for abdominal muscles or barre for your hips, glutes and thighs.

Why Do Xtend Barre on Openfit?

With dozens of studios around the world, classes may be available in your area, and DVDs are also available for purchase or streaming on Amazon. So why get your barre from Openfit?

The biggest advantages are convenience, flexibility, personal feedback, and potential savings when compared with other options.
For example, if you were to stream Xtend Barre: Lean & Chiseled on Prime Video, it would cost more than a whole month of access to Openfit (when you get the whole year upfront). You can also get a full month of the entire Openfit platform for less than the cost of a single class at most studios. Sure, some places offer your first class for free, but with an Openfit 2-week free trial you can take a lot more than one class for free.

Finally, with Openfit you gain access to multiple routines, styles and programs to vary up your schedule. Beyond the signature Xtend Barre class Openfit’s Xtend workout repertoire also includes Xtend Suspend, Xtend Stick, and Circuit 7 along with other classes that cover everything from high-intensity interval training to TRX (Total Resistance exercises). The variety means you can mix-up their routines and try multiple different styles to achieve goals and keep things interesting.

If you’re curious about Xtend Barre or barre as a workout in general, the Openfit 2-week trial is a great way to find out if it’s right for you.
